About This Site:
This fort dates back to 1755 when the French built it during their ongoing conflict with the British and named it Fort Carillon. It took two years to finish the fort and the French lost it two years later in 1759 when British General Jeffrey Amherst defeated the French and took the fort. He renamed it Ticonderoga.
For the U.S., the fort won it's everlasting fame when Revolutionary War commanders Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold each independently set out to capture the British fort in 1775. They reached the area about the same time and launched a unified attack that took the fort. Allen got all of the credit, much to Arnold's consternation.
That winter, American Colonel Henry Knox volunteered to take a task force to remove the guns from the fort for use by General Washington's colonial army. Knox succeeded and his captured guns helped force the British to evacuate Boston on April 14th, 1776.
Today, you can visit the historic fort as well as a 1920s pleassure garden called The King's Garden. There is also a restaurant called the Log House Restaurant.
