This statue of U.S. Army General and U.S. President Andrew Jackson was unveiled May 20, 1880 during the city's centennial celebration. It had been purchased from sculptor Clark Mills. The unveiling was attended by many dignitaries, including Civil War notables from both sides of the conflict, including Union General Don Carlos Buell, Confederate Generals E. Kirby Smith and Joseph E. Johnston. Jackson was the President of the United States from 1829-1837. He was a Major General in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and became a hero by defeating the British in New Orleans, Louisiana.
