Built in 1863, during the war, Hazen's Monument is one of the oldest Civil War monuments in the US. Erected by men of Colonel William B. Hazen's brigade, the monument was built to honor their fallen comrades lost in the Battle of Stones River and the earlier Battle of Shiloh. Included among those killed was Col. Hazen.
 
Hazen's Monument & GravesCol. Hazen's brigade was the only Union force to hold their ground on the first day fo the battle. The regiments that made up Hazen's brigade suffered 409 casualties, including 45 killed. Inside the stone wall surrounding the monument are buried the remains of the 45 men of Hazen's brigade who were killed during the Battle of Stones River. Hazen's Monument
