Late last year, historic preservationists began decrying a plan from Arlington National Cemetery to replace the historic Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers with a modern replica. It seems the Tomb has deteriorated some and suffered non-structural cracks in the marble facing.
A public outcry pressed Congress to mandate a report outlining all possible solutions, including simply repairing the historic monument. In August 2008, the Departments of The Army & Veterans Affairs, along with Arlington National Cemetery, delivered the report. In it, all parties agreed to repair the Tomb for now.
However, the National Trust for Historic Preservation reports that decision-makers at Arlington are still seriously considering replacing the Tomb with a replica as a long-term solution, despite the fact that doing so would seriously harm the historic character of Arlington National Cemetery and cost about 40 times more than repairing the Tomb. The National Trust encourages all preservationists to remain vigilant and inform others of the continue threat to this national treasure.
